Three transcontinental railways crossed Montana before a single interstate highway crossed the state. Railways offered relocation packages to potential homesteaders, advertising special cars to move families and farming implements, and railway agents who carted the homesteaders to their new land, and eventually transporting the wheat harvests to market. After a decade of unusually wet weather, many Montana wheat farmers lost their land to droughts in the 1920s.
