Fellow Travelers - Junction, Utah

ultralight aircraft on the street in Utah

Taxi from front yard to the Junction airport.

I met Bob on one of my earlier photo adventures - he's a former Navy pilot and Bryce Canyon park ranger, who has "retired" in Junction with a collection of fabulous toys and projects. Like breeding horses. A power parachute. And this ultralight.

Imagine the wind chill at 40 mph and 30 degrees on the ground.

Bob said it was great flying weather, calm air. Great if you have the gear to keep warm. And luckily, they had just plowed the Junction runway. Drop down the gate behind the high school, do the pre-flights, and take off.

Shortest take-off distance of any craft I've ever seen.

This is a two seater, and Bob is licensed as an instructor, so he can legally carry a passenger. He offered to take me up when it's warmer. The fact that I am excited about this possibility suggests that human nature is not fixed; not so long ago, I would have been terrified at the suggestion. He even showed me his emergency parachute. Bob knows stuff, like how to imprint a foal at birth so it can be socialized later, and how to make his own entertainment. I'd like to be back in Junction when he drives (not flies) the ultralight in the county parade.
