A tilt of the axis - Galway, Ireland

Galway central business tourist district color abstract

Galway central district, multiple exposure

"Cheerios have holes." That's what Deann said today. It's an immutable fact. Another fact is that I smashed my seven month old Motorola Razr V3 in Marlene's car door, and that wasn't too good for it. I'll be getting a new phone tomorrow. It actually still works, if I were a true aficionado of duct tape, I probably could keep it going. But I can do better by myself these days. Luckily, I got it to work long enough to forward my calls to another number. Dang, I loved that pink color.

Today, I went on a treasure hunt through the archives and came up with the Galway shot. Illustrating one reason why I am reluctant to delete images right away. I remember taking this while I waited for R and his colleagues at an outdoor pub in Galway. Light was too low to do anything other than goof around. I had missed multiple exposure processes from the film daus; I was messing around with the ME features of the new ( to me at that time ) Nikon D2X (link to replacement model). I learned how to do this technique in film, with a mathematical formula that doesn't cross over to digital (reduce the shutter speed by the square root of the number of exposures: 9 shots-> -3 exposure compensation, 16 exposures -> -4 exposure compensation, etc., altthough after about 20, the equation fails). With the LCD feedback, I figured out the digital equivalent while the boys ordered a stout. I didn't add any post-processing exposure compensation, just some Velvia-style saturation and contrast, which I'd rather add after the shoot instead of relying on the in-camera processing for my abstract work. These are the colors I remember from Galway.

Calendar and season are more immutable facts. I have nothing nothing time-dependent on the book project to shoot until the last weekend in April, except the guy who's going to try to break a motorcycle speed record in Sanpete County in March. Count me in on that one. The whole Trolley Square tragedy has dampened my enthusiasm for local neon shoots, for now anyway. Even though I saw crocuses today, it isn't spring (wildflowers and puffy cumulus clouds) and I have enough local winter stuff. Except maybe another venture to Sanpete County for snow-kiting, but even that's not until March 3. I could go to Bryce or Yellowstone, but I've been holding off until I figured out March (this is going to require some creative thinking - I can't put this book off until it rains in the desert!).

So I treasure hunt through my raw files. And start French lessons again, on trade for English lessons. Maybe I found a Spanish tutor today. Conduct a little business, make a few submissions. And wait for the eccentricity of the earth's orbit to align with my desires. But I've learned not to put life on hold. How about salsa lessons next Tuesday, anyone?
