My monster from Japan
I brought this fellow home from Japan in either 1997 or 1998. I kept him in my office at the UofU and brought him home last year. He sits peaceably next to the pink elephant and the Virgin on my Artist Way shelf. I bought it as souvenir of all the great monsters of Japan, mythologic and cinemagraphic; only when I got home did I realize that the tag (which he still sports) said “made in China.” I think the tag looks like a cape in this photo.
The Automatics Monster video
I’ve been listening to too much Virgin Radio via the ITunes, because the Automatics lyrics kept going through my head while I was Photoshopping my monster shot for your enjoyment. Looking up the actual lyrics, I found this YouTube version. Since I don’t look at tv, I am easily amused by such things…
the Lego version
but then I watched the homage lego. I knew, that like my made-in-China Japanese monster, this video is something special. Enjoy!

In my first trips to J-land (80′s) I brought back xmas gifts of classic J materials (silk, paper, ceramic) plus Transformers: big, heavy, all-metal transformers in great color schemes. I still have much of the classic stuff (which you can get anywhere), but the Transformers are gone. I regret not having the prescience to know they were to become collectables. I’d put one of them on my desk today if I had it. ARRRRRGH.
