What a sweetheart

donkey sweetheart cute Best Friends Animal Sanctuary

My name is Sweetheart

In Ireland , I developed an obsession with donkeys, which worsened after I read Kevin O'Hara's book, Last of the Donkey Pilgrims, about his travels around Ireland with a donkey cart. I like to look for them on my rambles (yesterday I spotted three near Marysvale). We met Sweetheart at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab.

We stopped by the sanctuary to pick up a birthday gift. Declining the tour in the interest of maximizing time on the west side of Zion, we drove around the grounds instead. If we had gone on the tour, we would have been at serious risk of bringing home another pet, and that just won't work until later this year at the earliest.

We spent a few minutes at the pet cemetery, Angel's Rest, and missed Lucy all over again. The wind chimes are something to hear, and it was a pretty calm day.

In between dawn and dusk photography, we found some time to write on our respective projects. The Kanab library rocks - lately we've been checking out the community libraries on our travels and they all rock. We are 3 for 3 on finding wireless, useful local information, and a nicer place to work than a motel room.

Another place that rocked was the Rocking V Cafe. They must get a lot of customers who are in town to visit the animal sanctuary, because the first thing the host did was point out their extensive vegetarian menu. Alas to some, we both enjoyed a fine elk tenderloin.

We've always stayed on the west side of Zion until this trip, but because of the holiday weekend and the last minute scheduling, we ended up in Kanab. We were amazed to find we liked Kanab better than Springdale - less crowded, a great restaurant, fewer t-shirt shops. It's not so convenient if I only wanted to be in the main canyon, but I had other tasks, and Kanab worked great as a base. I'll be heading back there shortly, perhaps as soon as a couple weeks. Maybe I'll have a chance to stop in and see Sweetheart. Too bad I don't have a place for her here at the ranchette.

Hrmmm, that donkey makes me wish I had managed to get a photo of Marley the donkey in Waipio Valley. He was awesome, mighty intelligent and oh, so friendly.
