No more treasure hunts

An exquisite litte treasure: Banksia after a rainstorm, Kings Park and Botanical Garden, Perth, Western Australia

The entire Getting Things Done process has paid off in one unexpected area - a near-cessation of "treasure hunts," by which I mean a frantic search for some object/phone number/scrap of paper. I could loudly lament hours of my life that I've wasted looking for "stuff," except I think it's probably the norm for most of us.

Since starting with GTD, my last treasure hunt was for an object that was in its proper GTD place, until it was knocked off its shelf in some flurry of doing.

The calendar aspect of GTD is the biggest change. In my previous life, I never really used one, because "firefighters don't have appointments." The primary function of my calendar was to document the date/time at which I began aware of some incident with potentially dangerous and/or litigious consequences and to document my response. Not a great attraction to implement in my new life.

But my new life has client appointments, follow-ups, events I want to photograph for the project. I love how ICal lets me have overlaying, color-coded calendars. I've got three active layers (my life, potential photo events, birthdays) plus a link to R's calendar. And it's all synced to my .Mac account, so R can check my schedule if he needs to coordinate something with his work schedule.

Now that R has explained the "alarm" function in ICal, I'm starting to rely on the calendaring process, which is the whole GTD point, for me. More things I don't have to think about, so I can spin those cycles on something more productive, or at least entertaining.
