Guest blogger Millie tells about our adventure:

From Salt Lake City at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains and the edge of the Great Basin, to the end of Highway 89 at Piegan, Montana in the middle of the prairie at the border of the US and Canada in 5 days. Round-trip. Not too bad if you love road trips through the West as I do, and if you have the knowledgeable, talented, and interesting company that I had.

Our trip began midmorning on Wednesday the 11th. We drove north on 1-15 to Great Falls where we spent the night. That part of the trip took about 10 hours. The road rose and fell through canyons and across the prairie farm lands and thrilled us with the exposure to big sky and rolling landscape.

The next day the 143 miles from Great Falls to Browning took nearly 8 hours. That was because Ann did some scouting and because this grain elevator and that field of newly baled hay, a friendly donkey, a few road-side metal sculptures, travelers on Honda Gold Wings and a coffee shop or two captured our attention and we had to stop to be in that space.

The big hit, of course, and the reason Ann needed to go was the North American Indian Days celebration in Browning on the Blackfeet Reservation. We saw breathtaking rodeo events, beautiful traditional Indian dancing and spectacular costumes, and heard competition drumming and singing.

I was tickled by the new experiences and the sync of information that came to me. Simple little things like the realization that this photographer’s life is hard work tucked tightly into beautiful experiences; the difference between looking and seeing; the interconnectedness of the highway system and how all of that came about and the cultural diversity that can be found along the great Highway 89.

Thanks, Ann. Thanks for ride and the memories. Thanks for letting me be part of this wonderful project you have undertaken.
