Nutcracker performances: 249 curlers

Two of my nieces study ballet in California, so we went last weekend to their season premiere of the Nutcracker. They danced beautifully, of course, and I also got to experience the pre-performance routine at home. Their mother (my sister) is expected to prep the second year party girl with a Shirley Temple-style hairdo for 8 performances. Then mom does their make-up (no lipstick until costumes are put on at the theatre), bundles them into the car, and delivers them into a room full of giggly girls all twirling around on top of each other.

83 curlers

Having done mice, soldiers, party girls and angels, my sister has it down to a routine now, but she would not admit to any disasters that might have occurred the first year of doing stage make-up (although apparently some other moms aren't quite as skilled...) The dancing soldier little sister counted the curlers as we put them away: 83. Each hairdo is bagged up between performances during the weekend, so they only have to roll her up three times. That's 249 curlers in a second year party girl season. Which is a lot.

I asked both girls which role she would dance if she were able to choose from any part in the ballet. I semi-expected them to choose the starring adult roles like Sugar Plum Fairy or the Snow Queen. But no, they both want to be Clara, because as they explained, she's in almost every scene. Absolute scene stealers are what they'd be. This year's highlight is that the choreography directs the party girl to stick her tongue out at a party boy. She's a natural, obviously a sign of things to come. Next year, the soldier will likely morph into a first year party girl. That could be 166 curlers per weekend. And my sister had best lay in a good supply of eyeliner.

Mom of the Party Girl & Soldier:

The girls loved the pictures of them! Thanks for coming and taking pictures. It was really great to see you both and hope that you can come again.

Can't wait to see the rest of the pictures (which I am sure are as good as the ones posted).

Love you!
