North Star: Spring Remix
Here's a fun spring makeover - I like the cheerful colors, not at all like the cold autumn day I made the original. How I did it follows:
North Star: the original, found in Ogden UT
Find edges filter effect
- Open the image, duplicate the background layer
- Run the find edges filter on the duplicate layer. Set blending mode to Difference, opacity to 100%
- Duplicate the Find Edges layer. Set blending mode to Hard Mix, opacity 20%
- Duplicate the Background layer, drag to the top of the stack. Set blending mode to Pin Light, opacity 100%
Layers palette of remix image
Possibilities for variation abound. Try Exclusion instead of Difference, blurring the Pin Light layer, inverting a layer, etc. Here I did a cartoon treatment of the same image:
North Star: Cartoon Remix
- Open the image, duplicate the background layer
- Run the find edges filter on the new, second layer. Duplicate second layer to set up the third layer. Return to second layer, invert. Set its blending mode to Difference, opacity to 100%
- Activate third layer. Set blending mode to Hard Mix, opacity 10%
- Duplicate the Background layer, drag to the top of the stack. Set blending mode to Hard Mix, opacity 10%
Just changing blending modes creates an entirely different look to the image
Which one do you like better? I started a new thread in the Team-PS Flickr pool on blending modes variations. I've also put the examples in the pool for side-by-side comparisons. Please contribute your own creations.
