Cowboy Expo Photo Clinic Wrap-up

Rounding the barrel

About 25 photographers participated in Saturday's Sanpitch Cowboy Expo photo clinic, despite the 7 am start. Friends on the organizing committee arranged for the Mt. Pleasant rodeo royalty and other friends to bring their horses and demonstrate skills for us, while Rich Legg and I gave a modified version of Rich's "10 things to improve your photography" workshop. Mostly Rich talked, while I cued up riders and helped folks as needed. Harley and Nicole lent a hand as well.

When I somehow found myself on the Sanpitch Cowboy Expo organizing committee, I knew I wanted to do something that could bring what we've been able to do with PhotowalkingUtah to Sanpete County. As I talked with folks at the clinic, it seemed like there was enough interest to start a new branch of Photowalking enthusiasts. I guarantee there will be participation from the Wasatch Front photowalkers, if someone takes the lead in North Sanpete to get the first events organized.

In rodeo arena events, the royalty and other (usually pretty and female) riders typically carry sponsor banners for a gallop around the arena. Rich took this task on for himself during the clinic.

Even folks with tons of experience got to shoot some special situations in great light. The chance to get in the arena itself and shoot these talented horse/rider teams up close is worth the early wake-up call. The riders were extraordinarily accommodating: repeating patterns as often as we wanted and hanging around for portraits long after we were supposed to clear the arena. Luckily, "cowboy time" gave us an extension. People left with a lot of full memory cards. Can't wait to see the photos at PhotowalkingUtah's Flickr pool. The Cowboy Expo committee is already planning for the 2010 event--maybe we'll meet a whole new gang of Photowalkers next year

Jarvie:

I was... soooo close to going. Was gonna carpool with a couple other photographers and get back in time for my 1pm wedding in SLC
But it was just too far of a location to go for such a short period of time.
So instead I stayed up until 5am editing pictures and not waking up until 10am

I guess it was good that I didn't add a few hundred more pictures to the huge mass of pictures I already have to edit.

You are awesome for putting it together... this is exactly the creative ideas that more people should be exploring and doing.
