Delivery of 45 cartons of books to the palace

On Friday I held the first book I have produced as publisher of Sagebrush Press: The Story of the Cathedral of the Madeleine, by Gary Topping. It has 16 photographs of mine in color, plus another 4 I managed to stuff in the text pages in B&W. The pink cloud buoyed me for less than 24 hours: the book is all I had hoped, and now I have to sell it. Actually 45 cartons of them, more or less.

I had actually expected it would take little longer to print, so I could get more ducks in a row as far as distribution and marketing, but no: 1 week from delivering my PDF on CD to books in cartons. Talk about awesome service. Now I am playing catch-up. I will be ready for the centennial celebrations of the Cathedral next month, hopefully with books in all the local outlets and an author's signing at the big party. That's the plan, as far as it is formulated.

In the meantime, I went on a Photowalk, one of the many world-wide photowalks that took place last week-end. Here's me trying to talk and shoot at the same time, in Bryan's recap. What was I doing on the phone? Arranging for Elizabeth to loan me a canopy for the Sanpitch Cowboy Expo this coming Saturday. It's regular circus around the palace.

I have learned how to photograph. I have learned how to design books. I have learned how to do many things I hope I never have to do again. I can learn how to sell books. But I'd rather give them away: it's much more fun.

The Giveaway: To celebrate this milestone with my readers, I will send a free copy of The Story of the Cathedral of the Madeleine to a random commenter to this post. Please tell about your first impression of the Cathedral. If you haven't been there, then recommend a photographable destination that inspires serenity and/or faith. I'll choose a winner by random from all comments received by Sunday at 6 pm.

If you don't win, but still want a copy, I'm offering my U.S. blog readers a special price (I wish I could give them all away, but I can't): $13.50 (instead of $16.95) including shipping, via Paypal only.

Congratulations to Shaun for winning the free book! Thanks to everyone who commented!

Todd:

I am always amazed at the photo's I see of a Catholic church on the inside, never been in one for real, but hope to one day. Congratulations on your new book! :o)

Cindi:

Congrats Ann - Very exciting!!
I drive by the Cathedral often and always intend to stop and walk around it but, haven't for some time. Beautiful architecture and detail, it is breath-taking.

jeff:

I have never been inside the Cathedral of the Madeleine, only driven past a few times. Don't go downtown too often. But have always thought it to be quite a striking church.
.
But in keeping with your 'Giveaway' requirements, here is another destination in Salt Lake City that, for me at least, inspires serenity and nurtures my faith.
.
It is a wee spot along the Jordan River, were if you sit patiently for a spell you can watch and enjoy the flowing water; inquisitive ducks; cautious muskrats; jumping fish; sparrows feeding their young; walkers, joggers, and bike riders passing over the footbridge; rustling trees; cool grasses; flowering plants; blue sky above; passing clouds; and the ever varying breezes. Thus providing one with glimpses of God's Glory as revealed in His Creation.

Shaun Nelson:

Ann, congratulations on your first book. I hope the rest are just as exciting as the first. Like many of our other buildings of faith in the valley, I'm always impressed how many church leaders come together and meet at the cathedral to celebrate and embrace the things that all faiths have in common, service to people.

Misty Fowler:

The Cathedral was overwhelming the first time I went there! I was a 27 year old converting to Catholicism, and had never been anywhere like it. I adore the outside architecture more than anything, but the artwork throughout was so moving, because I had learned so much about the history behind it all.

Judy Kiel:

Not the first impression, but the first time I shot inside was when the then-brand-new choir school gave their first public performance - it was quite the experience to shoot! Interesting thing was, I never heard back from them on any prints...oh well.

Jeremy Hall:

Congrats on the inaugural publication from Sagebook Press. I'll comment on the thread, but feel free to pick someone else to as a winner. Put me down for a sale to be delivered the next time we bump into each other.

Winona:

Jeremy Hall shared information on your book, so I had to come and take a look. First of all, congratulations! Second, what I could see is beautiful. I have never been to the Cathedral of the Madeleine, but some day will plan a trip just for photo fun in Utah.

A photographical destination that inspires serenity and/or faith for me can be found in of of many places. The closest is my backyard. The most fun is at a Nature Garden of your choice. My favorites are the Franklin Party Conservatory in Columbus, OH and the Missouri Botanical Gardens in St Louis. All three destinations have one thing in common: Butterflies.

I love to spend time watching butterflies as they flutterby from one flower to another. It brings me joy and provides a time for reflection whether I am just watching the butterflies or trying to get a fun picture of one. When ever I am in Columbus or St Louis, I always try to visit their butterfly houses.

Winona:

Now I must visit and read your archives!
