Sunrise at the starting line
Either the bike or its rider is called Butch-couldn’t really hear over the engines that were revving up at the start line of Speedweek. Bryan Jones and I drove out early on Sunday the 9th to ogle the shiny metal and make some pictures.

Alone in the pits
At our third round of doing this together, we left at 4:00 am, actually allowing enough time to get to the Salt Flats before sunrise. Any earlier, and you might as while spend the night, except there aren’t rooms to be had in Wendover for any reasonable price (and apparently a seven day minimum, according to one griping pit crew member). Not too many folks were in the pits when we drove through looking for subjects to decorate our sunrise pictures.

Final advice at the start line
I like shooting at the start line because of the interaction between driver, machine and crew. The adrenaline starts pumping, and teams have their routines, checklists and dramas that all unfold in the few minutes each crew has to get ready.

Support vehicle
Just for the fun factor, I popped into Pictureline the day before to rent a 10.5 mm fisheye for my D2X. Carrying both bodies (the D700 with the 70-200) isn’t my idea of recreational, but I had fun with the fisheye. It’s not a lens I would buy now that I have the full frame body, but it sure is nice to have access to it for a mere $20/weekend. Got to love having one of the last full-service camera stores so nearby.

Scanning the horizon
Two drivers, two bikes, one support vehicle. The other driver was putting on his leathers while I photographed his buddy. The bike on the right (#374B) went over 150 mph that day. Not sure the other bike ran at all. Maybe he too was just enjoying a day on the salt with his friends. Thanks Bryan, and next year we can start a little earlier and drive a little slower, ‘kay?

We need to bring a ladder next year too… Some gels and we might as well just camp out the night before now that I am thinking about it.
Hi Ann,
This is the crazy nikon girl you let use your wide angle lens up in Albion Basin. I was wondering if you decided to sell your lens? If not no biggie I just thought I would check in. Thanks for letting me use it. See you at the next walk.
