Statue of St. Peter in the Cathedral of the Madeleine, a favorite of my photos from the book
Back in July 2009, I published my first book as proprietor of Sagebrush press, and regular blog readers might remember it wasn’t (amazingly) about Highway 89. I published The Story of the Cathedral of the Madeleine by Gary Topping to coincide the centennial celebration of Salt Lake’s Catholic cathedral. While it has about 20 of my photos, it was also my first foray into book design, printing and warehousing.
Today it seems right that the first book I committed to ink is now the first one Sagebrush Press has published for the IPad. By publishing it electronically, I hope to extend the audience to visitors to Salt Lake City who want to know more about Catholics in Utah and their beautiful house of worship.
Now that I have completed my first print-to-EPub-for-IPad conversion, the next huge time sink/investment is to translate the Highway 89 book to an electronic format. The Cathedral of the Madeleine book had 16 color plates and 41 black and white images in a single column format. Ferreting out how the Ipad non-standardly implements the eEPub standard (no embedded fonts, for example) took significant time, but the actual conversion was fairly straightforward.
The Highway 89 book has 175 color images and a much more complex layout to revamp. With hard-won experience from the Cathedral project, I see some ways to automate the work but some tasks will simply require brute force.
Today’s post, however, is celebratory. I can complain more about the process later. Done is good. Potentially revenue producing is better. You can find The Story of the Cathedral of the Madeleine in the IBooks store on your IPad. Handsome softcover books are still available too, from Amazon, selected Utah retailers including Mancuso’s, and of course the publisher.
