The hens stopped laying just before Thanksgiving. Their reproductive hormones tend to shut down as the days get shorter. Because it’s been so cold the last few days, R put a lamp in the hoophouse for supplemental heat. Yesterday, someone laid an egg! So today the girls got fresh bedding in their nest boxes to encourage them along. Change is hard, and the clean hay needed a thorough group inspection.
No eggs today. The nesting material had been scuffed, squashed and rearranged, but no eggs. During evening chores I gave all eleven of them an encouraging speech and turned the light back on. Maybe they’ll have a committee meeting about it tonight, decide whose turn it is to earn their feed. I hope so. Otherwise I’m going to have to buy some eggs.
