I’m in Tucson for a few days to attend the rodeo with my mom. Somehow during the Highway 89 research, I missed this event, which has been going on since the 1920s to draw visitors to the city and celebrate the end of the tourist season.
Yesterday we went to parade, one claimed as the world’s longest non-mechanized parade. As in lots of horses. As we waited for the parade to begin, Mom speculated on how and whether anyone would clean up after the horses. In the end, we saw for ourselves as the City of Tucson deployed a moving wall of street sweepers following the final entry. Pity, however, the mothers of the high school band members, contending with shoes that marched on regardless in between all those horse- and mule-drawn conveyances.
