Spring flower remix

Today felt like a real spring day, after weeks and heaps of snow. A good day to run around doing errands for our Colorado River rafting adventure. Eleven days on the river, and a massive bag of camera gear to go with. I'm bringing three Nikon bodies and a waterproof Canon point and shoot that I'll be reviewing for PhotographyReview.com, after I run it through a few rapids.

After we come off river, we are heading directly to Moab for the Moab Photo Symposium. I'm sure Bruce Hucko can squeeze in a few more attendees. R is presenting on color vision, which Bryan says is R's best talk ever (and Bryan's sat through plenty). I'm giving a workshop on remixing on Saturday. It would be fun to meet up in Moab, if you have the chance to go.

Without electricity, wi-fi or even a computer, the Ann-alog will be taking a break for a few days. I'll make up for it with pretty pictures from deep within the canyon when I get connected again. Ought to be able to do something with all those cameras.

Fenceline remix

Fenceline

One ugly curve in Photoshop generated this effect. I see a lot my pictures this way, at least temporarily, because I use a curve adjustment layer in Photoshop to help me find any little dust spots. A quick dab on the base layer with the spot healing brush (or whatever tool works), then I throw the curve away.

Or I might not. Wildly colorful remapped images became cliched almost as soon as Photoshop was introduced, but occasionally one works into something I really like.

Either way, the dust spots are gone. My next camera will probably have a function to clean its own sensor. Will I still play with these styles of images once that happens? Or will the Photoshop action languish unused, lonely and forgotten? It likely will be a more deliberate act of creativity, rather than the found images of today. What have you lost or found in your photography toolkit lately?

Latte Remix

Remember the perfect latte I photographed in February? The long-promised remix is done. Seven months of pondering, one complete do-over, and four minor revisions to reach this happy conclusion to a project.

Glacial remix: Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park Mariposa Grove infrared alt technique

Mariposa Grove, Yosemite National Park (remix of IR and visible spectra)

Yosemite was my first national park - a high school cross-country team summer camp. The love of wild places stuck even if the running didn't. I've been to many incredible places since, but this one has my heart. R and I hiked up above Vernal Falls, ran out of time to complete the circuit around Nevada Falls before we were to meet my mom and her friends. One place I hadn't been in the park was Mariposa Grove, and R had never seen giant redwoods before. I captured the last bit of sunlight in the tree tops with the IR filter.

Sunset from Glacier Point

This was a family, not a photography trip, but we found the time to get up to Glacier Point for sunset. I have been here in mid-winter, and again in April, the last time in 1987. The changes in the park that I noticed most were seasonal - and I felt the changes in myself. I am mentally tougher on the trail and, I think, gentler in my mind. Not sure where this trail is headed; I never could have imagined it would lead me here, much better than I ever would have dreamed. Hope it doesn't take twenty more years to get back to Yosemite again.
